It is a criminal offence to describe yourself as any sort of chiropractor (whether expressly or by implication), if you are not registered with us.
It may also be an offence to knowingly employ a chiropractor who is not registered with the GCC [Section 44 Magistrates Courts Act 1980 / Section 293(2) Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 1995].
Who can apply for registration?
There are three categories of applicant:
-
those who hold a qualification recognised by the GCC
-
foreign qualified applicants who hold an equivalent qualification and pass a test of competence
-
EU nationals or their spouses who meet the requirements of Directive 2005/36/EC
If you come within the second or third category, you'll find it helpful to read our detailed Information Note on the application process for those with non-UK qualifications and/or who have been practising in another EU member state.
Before registration is granted all applicants must satisfy the Registrar that they are of good character and physically and mentally fit, as well as properly qualified.
How do I apply for registration?
You can obtain a Registration Information Pack by:
- telephoning: +44 (0)20 7713 5155 during office hours 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday, or

How much does registration cost?
The initial Registration fee is £1,250 or £100 for non-practising status. Thereafter, there is an annual Retention of Registration fee of £1,000 or £100 non-practising.
We are keen to register applicants as quickly as possible. Here are some tips to help smooth the way:
- Make sure that you include all the documents needed to support your application. Photocopies of documents (other than foreign passports) are NOT acceptable under any circumstances.
- If it is difficult for you to send us your original chiropractic diploma, ask the college or university that awarded you your chiropractic qualification to provide you with a certified letter which confirms the dates that you studied, the qualification you obtained and the date that you obtained it. Send the original letter to us (NOT a photocopy).
- Any documents that are not in English (or that are not multilingual including English) must be accompanied by an original translation from a recognised translator. For GCC purposes this must be somebody who is a Member of the Institute of Translation & Interpreting (telephone 020 7713 7600), or who is attached to a diplomatic mission or similar. A translation done by a friend or relation is not acceptable.
The GCC returns documents such as birth, marriage and qualification certificates by Royal Mail Special Delivery. The following original documents which must be supplied with your application will be retained as part of your records:
- Any Medical Report or Character Reference
- Any Certified Letters from Awarding Bodies
- Any translations of foreign language documents.
Foreign qualified applicants must pass the GCC test of competence prior to registration. The fee for the Test of Competence is £1,500. The test will be available at the University of Glamorgan on the following dates:
| Date of tests | Cut-off date for applications |
| 27 March 2010 | 01 February 2010 |
