The senseless deaths of George Floyd and many others from a black and minority ethnic (BAME) background serve as an unwelcome reminder of the racial injustice and inequality in our society today. We all have a role to play to bring about positive change by promoting equality.

The GCC stands with the Black Lives Matter movement and all those demanding an end to racism, discrimination and prejudice in the UK and around the world.  We further reaffirm our long-standing commitment to working together with all our stakeholders and members of the public to act and to challenge racial and social inequality in this sector.

The Equality Act 2010 places a public duty on regulatory bodies, such as the GCC, to positively promote equality and implement changes that nurture an equal and just environment for our staff, registrants and stakeholders. We can all do our part to advance the fundamental principles of equality, inclusion and justice – within the GCC, and in society at large, and to contribute to bring about positive changes for patients, students and the public, to reflect contemporary British society.

We have taken steps to reflect and discuss this complex issue by having an open dialogue within our team, exchanging views and gathering feedback from our BAME colleagues on how we can further incorporate equality, diversity and inclusion in all our activities.

As a regulator and employer, we strive to ensure our activities provide equality of opportunity by:

  • Ensuring our regulatory activities are fair and free from unlawful discrimination.
  • Ensuring that promoting equality and valuing diversity are reflected in the Code and standards we set for the chiropractic profession.
  • Promoting equality of opportunity and access to the chiropractic profession.
  • Communicating and engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders in an accessible manner.
  • Ensuring high standards in the recruitment, development and ongoing work of staff and non-executives and partners.
