Please note: If you have not been registered for two or more years, you are expected to complete the Return to Practice in the UK programme before applying for restoration to the register. Please see further details below.

The process for rejoining the register will depend on the reason you were removed from the register. This could include a lapse in your registration or voluntarily removal from the register.  You may have been removed from the register by the General Council following a finding that your original application was fraudulent or otherwise incorrectly made or following a hearing of the professional conduct committee (PCC).

You can restore your name to the register if:

  • your registration lapsed

  • you did not submit your CPD summary or it was not accepted, or

  • you took voluntary removal from the register.

It is an offence to practise as a chiropractor in the UK without registering with the GCC and we strongly recommend not booking any patients until you have received confirmation from us that your name has been restored to the register.

IMPORTANT: While we process applications as soon as possible, it may take up to TWO WEEKS  from receipt of your application.

Find out how to restore your name to the register

You may apply for restoration to the register at any time by following these steps:

  1. Complete the application form

  2. Complete a CPD record summary for any period you were on the Register.  This must be typed and not hand-written and submitted as one WORD document only.

  3. If you were removed from the register as you failed to complete your CPD, you will also need to provide evidence of CPD completed since you were last registered, up to a total of 150 hours, details can be found here

  4. Provide a copy of your passport certified by someone of professional standing and state 'I confirm this to be a true and accurate copy of the original passport as seen by me'

  5. If you wish to practise as a chiropractor in the UK, you will need to provide evidence of your professional indemnity (insurance) arrangements before we restore your name

  6. Pay the restoration fee of £750

You may also be asked to provide additional information if your situation has changed during the time you have not been registered. For example, if you have received a criminal conviction or caution, experienced any health issues or changed your name.

If you were removed from the register by a hearing of the Professional Conduct Committee, contact the registrations team. Only the professional conduct committee can instruct the Registrar to restore your name to the Register. This can only happen if 10 or more months have elapsed since your removal. If this applies to you, please contact the registrations team

If the Council removed you because there was a problem with the original registration (fraud or similar) then you will need to make a fresh application for initial registration.

Returning to practice after two or more years

If you have not been registered with the GCC for two or more years, you are expected to complete the Return to Practice in the UK programme before applying for restoration to the register.

The return to practice process involves the following three stages:

This involves reflecting on your current knowledge and competencies, with reference to key elements of practice identified by the GCC, to determine whether you need to prepare for your return to practice by undertaking some learning activities. You must complete a structured form, based upon principles of The Code, to indicate those areas where you feel you have/do not have requirements for preparatory learning. Note that the extent of your learning needs is expected to reflect the time you have been away from practice and the amount of experience you gained prior to leaving. You can complete Stage 1 via the Learning Needs Assessment form.

Once you have completed your Learning Needs Assessment, you must plan a learning portfolio to address your needs. This plan involves identifying learning activities that match learning outcomes attached to each area of practice you feel requires attention.

Your completed Learning Needs Assessment and Learning Plan must be sent to the GCC for our clinical assessors to check that it is appropriate and consistent with the amount of time and circumstances under which you have been away from practice. An approved Learning Plan will be returned to you for implementation.

You can complete Stage 2 by downloading and filling in the Learning Plan

Once you have completed Stages 1 & 2, email them to registrations@gcc-uk.org

Your forms will be reviewed by a Registrations Assessor, who will either:

  • accept your learning plan, in which case you can progress to Stage 3, or

  • offer advice on where to amend your learning plan if it isn't acceptable. In this case, you will need to repeat Stage 2.

Once your Learning Plan has been approved, you can start working through the activities, recording your reflections as you go. When you have undertaken the planned learning and completed all fields on the form provided, you can submit this to the GCC for review. We will contact you regarding the next steps in terms of your return to practice.

You can complete Stage 3 by downloading and completing a copy of the Report of Learning Activities

Once completed, email the form back to registrations@gcc-uk.org.

Registration Assessors will review your Report of Learning Activity form, after which you will:

  1. be eligible to apply to the GCC; or

  2. will need to make changes to show that you have fully complied with this stage.

Please be aware that all three stages may take some time to complete. You must have completed the entire Return to Practice programme before we can accept an application from you.

Charlie Barclay qualified as a chiropractor in 2017 and ran her own practice before taking time away from the profession for health reasons. In 2024 she completed the Return to Practice and now works in a multi-disciplinary clinic.

Learning Opportunities

There is a broad range of opportunities available to help you address your learning needs. These include reviewing regulations, standards and reviews, reading books and research articles, and attending training courses, seminars and conferences.

Top tip! We strongly recommend you identify a current GCC registrant to act as a mentor to provide advice for each stage of the Return to Practice process. Although we aren’t able to help you identify a suitable mentor; you may want to consider a former colleague, an intended future colleague, or a fellow graduate, for example. You should take steps to identify a suitable mentor at an early stage of the Return to Practice process.

How a mentor can support your return to practice

  • Help to identify your learning needs such as areas of practice that have changed since you left concerning good practice guidelines, the evidence base, regulation and legislation.

  • Provide opportunities to observe clinical practice, participate in practice activities such as clinical audits, or use clinical equipment/applying clinical techniques in a training scenario

  • Critically review both your Learning Needs Assessment and Learning Plan and the final Report of Learning Activities before submission to ensure these are complete and meet our requirements.

Fees

Your fees help fund the important work of the GCC to maintain high standards across the chiropractic profession in the UK and ensure the safety of patients receiving chiropractic treatment.

The GCC is financially independent of government, which means that we do not receive funding. We see our independence as an important part of maintaining standards of the chiropractic profession.

Full payment of the registration fee is required in advance of joining the GCC register, regardless of joining date i.e. if you join the register in January, May or August.

The GCC's full registration year is from 1 January to 31 December. The end date (31 December) remains the same regardless of whether you are registering, transferring, restoring or retaining GCC registration. We do not allow pro-rata payments. This means your fee is the same regardless of the point in the year that you apply to join.

Restoration fee (practising)

 £750

Restoration fee (non-practising)

 £100

Please note - the initial fee carries your registration to December only and, if you wish to remain registered for the following year, you must also pay the retention fee before 30 November and also complete a retention application.

How to pay your restoration fee

The easiest way to make payment is via a secure online payment link, which will allow you to pay using the card of your choice. To request a payment link, please contact the Registrations Team using the following email address: registrations@gcc-uk.org
