Information on fees for registering or rejoining the GCC register
Payment of GCC registration fees
The rules regarding payment of registration fees are contained within the GCC's founding legislation (The Chiropractors Act 1994). The Act stipulates that the full registration fee must be paid before registration can be granted. As a result, the GCC cannot offer pro rata payment of its registration fees ie. paying the registration fee by monthly installment for the current year.
However, it is possible to pay in advance for the following year by setting up a Direct Debit with the GCC. See below for details.
Our registration fees are as follows:
Practising
Initial registration fee: £750
Annual retention fee: £800
Transfer to practising fee: £800 between 10 November and 1 January, £700 between 2 January and 9 November)
Restoration fee: £750
Non-practising
Initial registration fee: £100
Annual retention fee: £100
Restoration fee: £100
Administrative fees
Certificate of Current Professional Status: £50
Test of Competence: £2,000
How long does my registration last?
The GCC's full registration year is from 1 January to 31 December. The end date (31 December) remains the same regardless of whether you are registering, transferring, restoring or retaining GCC registration. Furthermore, full payment of the registration fee is required in advance of joining the GCC register, regardless of joining date ie. if you join the register in January, May or August, full payment of the relevant annual fee is required.
Please note: registrants will only remain on the GCC register until 31 December, if payment of the following year's registration is made by the statutory deadline. If payment is not made by the statutory deadline, registration will lapse on 15 December ie. at the end of the retention period.
Methods of payment
There are several ways to pay your GCC registration fee. Please note that all fees must be paid before registration, restoration, transfer or retention on the GCC register can be granted.
Credit or debit card
Applicants for initial registration, the Test of Competence and retention on the register will need to make payment via the GCC Registrant Portal.
Applicants payment for restoration to the register, transfer to practising registration and for Certificates of Current Professional Status should complete the Card Payment Form and email it with their application.

There can be varying delivery times when using electronic transfer ie. some with instant transfer of funds while others may take three working days to deposit the funds into the General Chiropractic Council account. Your bank can advise you on expected delivery times.
Important: Ensure you cover any electronic transfer fees from the bank in addition to the required GCC payment. Fees can often be taken by banks when paying from an overseas bank account. You will only be registered once the full fee has been paid.
Direct Debit
In addition to paying by credit/debit card or electronic transfer, registrants may also pay by monthly direct debit for a year in advance ie. 12 months in advance. Registrants can create a Direct Debit mandate via their GCC Registrant Portal page (Direct Debit tab)
It is not possible to pay the initial registration fee by Direct Debit.
Cash and Cheque
The GCC cannot accept payment by cash or cheque.
Why do you charge fees?
We are financially independent of government, which means that we do not receive funding. We see our independence as an important part of maintaining standards of the chiropractic profession.
What do we do with the fee?
We use the fees we receive to perform our vital statutory function. As the UK’s regulator of chiropractors we:
- Keep patients safe
- Register chiropractors
- Publish a Code of Practice
- Maintain educational standards
- Support the development of the profession
- Take right touch action if needed
- Help to support public confidence in chiropractors.
If I'm not registered for the full year can I pay part of the fee?
The rules that govern the General Chiropractic Council do not allow us to offer pro-rata fees. This means that applicants must pay the full fee before joining, transferring, rejoining or retaining their name on the register.
We appreciate the fact we are unable to offer pro-rata fees may not be favourable for all registrants. It is something we are aware of but are currently unable to do anything about. Fees form part of our rules and therefore are absolute and are enshrined in law and changing rules is incredibly difficult in the current climate.
What happens if I wait to register or restore my place on the register until after 10 November?
If you are registered or restored to the register on or after 10 November, you must pay the full registration or restoration fee.
However, we will not ask you for a retention fee for the following year. This means your registration will be, for example, from 10 November 2019 to 31 December 2020.
Important: If you are registered or restored before 10 November then you will need to apply for retention for the following year before 30 November, including paying the retention fee (£100 for non-practising registration, £800 for practising registration).
How do I access a receipt for either retention or a new registration?
