Retention update for registrants

Retaining for 2027?

Please note that as 30 November 2026 falls on a weekend, we have extended the deadline for receipt of completed retention applications, indemnity information and the retention fee to 5pm on Monday 1 December 2026.

Retain your registration online

Each year all chiropractors registered with the General Chiropractic Council are sent a request to complete their retention to ensure they remain on the register if they want to continue to practise chiropractic in the UK.

The retention application must be completed and the retention fee paid, by 1 December. You can complete your retention application and pay the fee via the portal.

If you are thinking of changing your status, for example from practising to non-practising, or no longer wish to stay on the register, click here.

Why do I have to complete the retention application?

Chiropractors who wish to remain on the register next year need to show us they are fit to practice by filling in a form confirming whether they have, for example, any disciplinary matters with other regulators, health issues or criminal convictions. There is also an annual fee to stay on the register.

Additionally, registrants must agree to the following declarations:

  • I agree to inform the General Chiropractic Council within 7 days if I am charged with a criminal offence, convicted of a criminal offence, accept a caution, reprimand, warning, Fixed Penalty Notice or Penalty Notice for Disorder, or a similar measure in the UK or abroad.
  • I agree to notify the General Chiropractic Council within 7 days, if I am subject of a regulatory investigation; if I am suspended, dismissed, refused membership or placed under a practice restriction following concerns about my professional conduct or competence by another organisation (including regulator, insurer, professional body, employer).
  • I confirm that my First Aid provision is suitable for patients and is cognisant of the first aid scenarios that may arise
  • I declare that all information supplied by me in support of my application for retention of registration with the General Chiropractic Council is, to the best of my knowledge and belief, true and accurate
  • I understand that the Registrar may take steps to verify any such information supplied by me, and that such steps may include a visit to any address at which I practice. In the event of any such visit I agree to cooperate fully.
  • I declare that I have read the GCC's Code of Professional Practice, 2026, and understand that my actions may be judged against the standards and principles it contains. I further agree to notify the GCC promptly—within 7 days—of any matter relating to section C.15 of the Code, which includes being barred by the Disclosure and Barring Service or being refused insurance. I understand that if I fail to do so without a reasonable explanation, it may be treated as a fitness to practise matter.
  • I declare that I have read all current GCC guidance notes and will continue to read new guidance as and when it is published.

What happens if I miss the 1 December deadline?

We will issue you with a final warning notice before the deadline of 1 December, which gives you a further 14 days (up until 14 December) to fill in the form and pay the fee. If your application is not complete by the 15 December your registration will lapse and you will no longer be registered.

Can I Transfer Non-Practising to Practising registration during the retention period?

Yes, you can apply during the retention period for the following year, which means your practising status will not start until 1 January of the following year. If you wish your transfer to become active sooner, please get in touch via registrations@gcc-uk.org.

Please note that, if you are are applying to transfer as part of your retention application and have been registered as non-practising for two or more years, you will firstly need to complete the Return to Practice in the UK programme.
