Reviewing the GCC’s Continuing Professional Development model

The General Chiropractic Council (GCC) has begun a strategic review of its Continuing Professional Development (CPD) model and reporting process, the first formal review since 2017. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve rapidly, and with increasing ministerial interest in contemporary CPD approaches, this is the right moment to ensure our model remains robust, relevant and fit for the future.

Why the review is happening

Since 2019, improvements have been made to CPD guidance, the reporting system and reflective elements. However, across UK healthcare regulation there has been a clear shift towards more outcomes-focused CPD, emphasising critical reflection and the impact of learning on practice.

This review will help us understand how best to support chiropractors’ ongoing professional development while ensuring our processes remain proportionate, evidence-based and aligned with our regulatory responsibilities.

Who is leading the work

The review is being led by two members of the Education Committee with extensive experience in regulatory and professional development projects. A steering group of lay and registrant Council members has also been established to support the project as it progresses.

What the review will cover

Through 2026 and 2027, the project will explore:

  • The purpose and value of CPD within chiropractic practice
  • Different CPD models used across UK healthcare regulators
  • Options for future CPD models and reporting/audit processes
  • How CPD can best align with the GCC’s new Code of Professional Practice
  • How to ensure any future model is inclusive, proportionate and supports safe, effective patient care

The project will also include consultation with registrants, professional bodies, patients and the public to ensure a wide range of views inform any final recommendations or guidance.

What this means for you right now

Nothing is changing at this stage. Registrants should continue to follow the current CPD requirements exactly as they are.

As the project progresses, we will share updates and create opportunities for registrants to contribute their views. A dedicated CPD conversation space has been developed on the GCC website.

Looking ahead

The aim of this work is simple: to ensure the GCC’s CPD model continues to support high-quality chiropractic practice, reflects modern expectations of professional learning, and remains aligned with the statutory role we play in protecting the public.

We look forward to engaging with you throughout this process and ensuring your experiences and insights help shape the future of CPD in UK chiropractic.
