As the end of the CPD year approaches, this month’s prompt is about recognising the learning, reflection and professional development that may already be happening in your day-to-day life.

CPD does not always need to come from formal courses or paid events. It can include a wide range of learning, provided it is relevant to your professional development and helps you reflect on your practice, judgement or responsibilities as a registered chiropractor.

You may want to think about:

  • a webinar, conference, discussion or professional event you attended

  • a patient safety issue, near miss, complaint, concern or quality improvement activity you reflected on

  • learning from another healthcare setting, colleague, professional discussion or personal experience

  • a situation where you thought about risk, communication, safeguarding, accessibility or quality of care

  • how you have maintained your knowledge and professionalism while not currently practising or while away from day-to-day clinical work

For this year’s focused reflection on Safety and Quality in clinical practice, you are encouraged to draw on real examples from your own experience. This may include examples from practice, professional learning, voluntary activity, your experiences of receiving healthcare, caring responsibilities or personal circumstances, where these have helped you think about safety, quality, professionalism or how you would approach future practice.

You could ask yourself:

  • What did I learn from this experience?

  • How does it relate to safety, quality or the standards in the Code of Professional Practice?

  • What did it help me understand about risk, communication, accessibility or patient care?

  • How might this learning influence my future practice or professional judgement?

  • Is there anything I would do differently as a result?

If you are registered as non-practising, CPD is still a requirement. CPD can help you maintain a connection with professional standards, developments in the profession and your responsibilities as a registered chiropractor.

If illness, maternity or paternity leave, bereavement or other significant life events have affected your ability to complete CPD, please refer to the GCC’s guidance on exceptional circumstances and waivers.
